What the referee says at each stage of the game
Preparation
- Write down the rulebook, the date of the edition, the line-up and the numbers.
- Check the masks, cards, stopwatch and protocol.
- Announce the length of the speeches, and the order for nominations, voting, night phases and penalties.
- Check that beginners understand the difference between a nomination and a vote.
Example of a referee command. "Today we play under the rulebook [name, edition]. Nominations only in your own minute. Voting only after my command."
What to check. If the host cannot name the chosen edition, the game must not be presented as an official tournament under that standard.
Day
- Name the number of the speaker.
- Start the time and watch for speech outside the minute.
- When a candidate is nominated, check the form, the right to nominate and that there is no duplicate.
- Confirm the accepted candidacy at once and write down the order.
- At the end of the day, read out the list of candidates.
Example of a referee command. "The floor to player number four… Accepted, number seven… Time. For the vote: numbers seven, two, nine."
What to check. Do not add a candidate whom nobody nominated correctly. Do not confuse the seating order with the order of nominations.
Voting
- Announce the candidates in the accepted order.
- Name the current candidate using the formula in the rulebook.
- Watch the raising of hands and the moment of cut-off.
- Record the number of votes and any violations.
- Announce the result, or move to the tie procedure.
Example of a referee command. "Two, who votes for player number two? Stop. Four votes."
What to check. Do not improvise in a tie; take into account that under RFM a vote that was not cast goes automatically to the last candidate.
Night
- Give the command to put on masks.
- Announce the night phases in the sequence set by the rulebook.
- Watch that the shot is agreed and that eyes stay closed.
- Run the don's and the sheriff's checks without extra information.
- Record the result and announce the morning.
Example of a referee command. "The city falls asleep. The mafia goes hunting… The mafia goes to sleep… The don wakes up…"
What to check. The order and the gestures may differ between federations. The referee may not hint at a player's role or at a result non-verbally beyond the rulebook.
