Boulevard Mafia (Cartel) rules
Basis and status of the rules
City role-playing Mafia is played under many club rulesets. The Putana, also called the Mistress or the Beauty, appears in common versions, but her team, blocking, protection, alibi and the consequences of her elimination differ. So one unambiguous Fortuna edition is fixed here, and it is not presented as a common standard.
This is Fortuna's own edition, not an official federation ruleset. The Barman role, the limits, the conflict resolution rules, the decks for 20 to 30 players and the card texts are Fortuna's own decisions and are still being playtested. They should not be taken as official or as the most common.
Sides and winning conditions
- City: citizens, the Commissioner, the Doctor, the Putana and other clearly marked City roles. The City wins when all Mafia members and the Maniac have left the game.
- Mafia: the Don, mafiosi and roles clearly marked as Mafia. The Mafia wins when the Maniac has left and the number of living mafiosi is at least the number of living City players.
- Maniac: a separate side. The Maniac wins when, after all actions are resolved, the Maniac and at most one other living player remain.
The order of checking is: first the Maniac, then the City, then the Mafia. The game can end in a draw if no living players remain at once and no condition is met.
Preparation
- The host chooses the mode, the number of players, the set of roles, the timers, the way roles are revealed and the voting settings.
- The host shows the deck by count, shuffles the cards and deals each player one closed role. Players do not show their cards.
- The host writes down which number has which role in a closed record.
- The zero night: the Mafia opens its eyes and meets, the Don identifies himself, the other special roles meet the host one by one without acting.
- The first day starts after the zero night, with no eliminations.
What next
- How the game goes: day and night step by step
- Refereeing: resolving conflicts and breaches
- Decks by number of players
- Roles and cards
Sources and differences
The club edition was compared with published city Mafia rules. The differences are noted for each source. The sources are in Russian.
- Putana as a City blocking role: it also has an alibi and chain consequences of her elimination, which Fortuna does not use.
- Mafia Drive club ruleset: a real club ruleset with a Putana and extra roles; the Putana is included from 13 players.
- Omerta Games rules: city Mafia with a Doctor, a Putana, a Maniac and a Commissioner.
- RBC overview of common roles: city Mafia roles, including the Mistress, the Journalist and the Lawyer.
- Mafia Game rules: an alternative reading of the Putana as a neutral side, which differs from Fortuna.
